  • Aravaipa Canyon Restoration

    During this trip we are continuing a new task in Aravaipa Canyon - removing an invasive plant called vinca (or periwinkle) from the understory of the creek banks. This will require digging and fastidious removal of root material, with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We'll be bending, digging, and getting dirty. We will also be installing native plants in previously cleared areas to improve pollinator habitat.

    Biologists Mirna Manteca (Sky Island Alliance) and Sergio Avila (Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum) will speak about the biology and ecology of butterflies and other pollinators, with special emphasis on Monarch butterflies.

    If you've been down to Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains recently, you may have noticed that there are two new bridges near the trailheads. We are working with the Coronado National Forest, Borderlands Restoration, and Friends of Madera Canyon to restore ecosystem function at the site. Come out and help stabilize this beautiful canyon (and birding hotspot) just an hour south of Tucson.

  • Habitat Restoration at Gila Cliff Dwellings NM

    Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument Glenwood, NM, United States

    Sky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service to restore a recently-burned hill slope near the main ruin loop at the Monument. Volunteers will be tasked with eradicating non-native plants, installing native plants in their place, and conducting erosion control.
