Come See Us at “Science on the Sonoita Plain”

Empire RanchSky Island Alliance staff will be at the Science on the Sonoita Plain Symposium on Saturday, May 7.

Hosted by the Cienega Watershed Partnership and Friends of Sonoita Creek, this day of events will cover science and engagement across the Cienega and Sonoita Creek watersheds, from Vail to Patagonia and beyond. You’re invited to share your experience with local partners, stakeholders, and community members in a day of exploration and presentation.

Schedule of Events

7 a.m. — guided birding hike around the Empire Ranch Headquarters house, led by Tucson Audubon.

9 a.m. — tour of recent restoration projects near Empire Ranch Headquarters, led by guides from Watershed Management Group. Separately, docents from the Empire Ranch Foundation will lead tours of the ranch’s historic house.

11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. — break for lunch, with options for picnics nearby or exploration of local restaurants and vineyards in Sonoita, Patagonia, and Elgin.

1 p.m. — Q&A at the Nature Conservancy’s Sonoita Creek Preserve. Local experts will be on hand to answer questions about restoration projects, trails, and citizen engagement.

3-5 p.m. — we invite everyone to stay at the Nature Conservancy’s beautiful Sonoita Creek Preserve to relax, visit, and see citizen water monitoring in action.
