En toda la carrera mi encuentro más cercano a una cámara trampa fue una vez en un taller que tuvimos, donde nos enseñaban a posicionar las cámaras y a clasificar las apariciones de animales que salían, conocía lo básico pero nunca tuve la oportunidad de usarlas. Dentro de la pasantía lo primero que me dieron fue una cámara trampa y una de las primeras tareas que nos dieron fue que la instaláramos donde quisiéramos, yo decidí instalarla dentro de un rancho localizado en Esqueda.
Throughout my career my closest encounter with a camera trap was once in a workshop we had, where they taught us to position the cameras and to identify the appearances of animals that appeared, so I knew the basics but never had the opportunity to use the cameras. During the internship the first thing that Sky Island Alliance gave me was a camera trap and one of the first tasks they gave us was to install it wherever we wanted. I decided to install my camera inside a ranch located in Esqueda, Sonora.

Fue entonces que un día 27 de junio para ser exactos decidí ir a colocarla, para comenzar a monitorear todo el mes de julio. Siendo sincera no creí que tendría ningún avistamiento y pensé que mi cámara se llenaría de puras vacas cosa que pasó la mayoría de las veces pero en realidad quien tuvo más protagonismo fue un cuervo (Corvus corax) que muestro abajo.
It was on June 27th to be exact I decided to go and place the camera, to start monitoring for the entire month of July. To be honest, I did not believe that I would have any wildlife sightings and I thought that my camera would be filled with pure cows, which did happen most of the time, but in reality the animal who had the most prominence was a crow (Corvus corax) that I show below.
Cuando pasó la primera semana regresé a revisar el estado de la cámara y por curiosidad saque la tarjeta SD y comencé a revisar las fotos, al ver que salían muchas vacas pensé que mi temor se había vuelto realidad pero al llegar a las fotos nocturnas fue cuando me llevé una gran sorpresa.
When the first week passed, I went back to check the status of the camera and out of curiosity I took out the SD card and began to review the photos, and when I saw that many cows appeared I thought that my fear had come true but when I got to the night photos, I got a big surprise.
La primera foto nocturna que vi, tarde mucho para agarrarle sentido, fue a las fotos de las siguientes noches cuando capté lo que había en mi primer foto nocturna, se trataba nada más y nada menos que un ¡venado!, estaba detrás de un arbusto y sus patas eran lo único que sobresalían.
It took a long time to make sense of the first nighttime photo I saw, it was the photos of the following nights that made it clear what it was—nothing more and nothing less than a deer! It was behind a bush and its legs were the only thing sticking out.

Después de revisar toda esa semana logré darme cuenta la variedad de animales que había dentro del rancho, muchos solo hacen su aparición en la noche, en el dia llegaban algunas diferentes especies de aves incluyendo águilas, halcones, pájaros carpinteros, codornices, palomas, gorriones, etc. Y eso solo es un aproximado de especies en la primera semana. De noche aunque no hubiera muchas apariciones, las que llegaban me sorprendieron mucho entre esas especies de hábitos nocturnos me encontré con buhos, lechuzas, mapaches, coyotes, jabalíes, venados, zorros, etc.
After reviewing photos all week, I managed to realize the variety of animals that were inside the ranch, with many only making their appearances at night, and in the day some different species of birds arrived including eagles, hawks, woodpeckers, quail, pigeons, and sparrows. And that’s only an approximate list of species during the first week. At night, although there were not many sightings, the ones that arrived surprised me a lot. Among those species of nocturnal habits, I found owls, raccoons, coyotes, wild boars, deer, and foxes.
La actividad de cámara trampa sobrepasó por mucho mis expectativas, por la cantidad de especies que encontré y la hora en la que aparecían. Lo que más me sorprendió fue la aparición de un mapache porque no tenía idea de que rondaran por estos alrededores ya que jamás había visto uno, definitivamente podría decir que la cámara trampa fue una de las actividades que más me emocionó hacer durante la pasantía.
The camera trap activity far exceeded my expectations, due to the number of species I found and the time of day that they appeared. What surprised me the most was the appearance of a raccoon because I had no idea that they were around these surroundings since I had never seen one. I can definitely say that the camera trap was one of the activities that I was most excited to do during the internship.
