An Approach for Creating Site-Specific Planting Palettes to Support Pollinators in the Sky Islands

While the Sky Islands are known for their many pollinator species, certain populations are declining due to habitat loss and climate conditions. In this article, researchers introduce a native “planting palette design approach” to pollinator restoration in the Sky Islands. The plan focuses on increasing landscape diversity by supplementing existing plants with ones that bloom during various seasons, grow at multiple elevations, tolerate high temperatures, and adapt to fire, among other traits.

Wildlife Fencing Recommendations for Davidson Canyon at I-10

In 2002, Sky Island Alliance initiated a study for this important wildlife corridor just east of Tucson. Since then, we have deployed trained volunteers to conduct seasonal surveys along a 1.5-mile transect in both north and south Davidson Canyon. We have also added remote wildlife cameras at spring sites north and south of the highway. Results will be shared periodically as they become available.
