Kickoff for Tucson Weeds Week

We'll be exploring with some botanist friends, looking at plants and learning to use iNaturalist to identify them. The goal is to grow our community of locals attuned to plant life so we can be alerted sooner when new species arrive in our area.

From Summer Rains to Winter El Niño: The Climate Outlook for the Southwest
VirtualJoin us for our next virtual Coffee Break to learn more about one of our region’s favorite topics: rain — how much we can hope for and when it’s likely to come next. Our guest speakers are climate experts Mike Crimmins and Zack Guido from the University of Arizona. Their presentation will review how this year’s monsoon evolved across the U.S. Southwest from June through September, highlighting key precipitation patterns, temperature anomalies, and notable shifts. Then they’ll turn to the strong El Niño now developing and what it may mean for precipitation, temperature, drought, and other climate impacts across our region during the upcoming fall and winter.

Erosion Control in the Catalinas
Join us in the Santa Catalina Mountains for a weekend building erosion-control structures in areas burned by the 2020 Bighorn Fire. Together, we can protect springs from landslides and ensure the mountain absorbs even more rain and snowmelt, recharging the aquifer that plants, wildlife, and people like us depend on. Note: Carpooling from Tucson is available, and day-trippers are most welcome.

FotoFauna Two-Part Class in Tucson

Springs Restoration in the Whetstones

Closed to the public, the spring is more than two miles from any other water source and is a favorite haunt of coatis, black bears, mountain lions, coyotes, and birds.

This year, we are placing special emphasis on the Sky Islands’ aquatic ecosystems, including springs, rivers, and fascinating creatures like Tarahumara salamanders. This event is made possible through a collective commitment, with the participation of organizations, students, artists, teachers, and schools, sharing their talent and knowledge through workshops, talks, exhibits, artistic performances, and community activities.
