Much of the area in the Sky Islands region in Mexico is privately owned and belongs to ranchers and ejidatarios who, for generations, have worked and lived off these lands. Their relationship with the territory is not only economic, but also cultural and emotional, so much so that a cowboy identity has developed. That’s why when the ranch is in crisis due to water scarcity, soil degradation, and loss of vegetation, not only is the ecosystem affected, but also the livestock and the lives of the families who depend on the ranch.
At Sky Island Alliance, we recognize that our conservation efforts are most effective when we have the support of landowners. In our Ranchos Regenerativos program, we work hand in hand with ranchers and ejidatarios, who play a fundamental role in helping to regenerate the soil, restore water infiltration, protect biodiversity, and improve ranch productivity, thanks to their daily experience in the field, knowledge of the land, and commitment.
We currently work with several ranchers and ejidatarios who have opened their doors to us and have become important allies of the project. Their commitment has enabled significant achievements in the recovery of soil, water, and biodiversity. We don’t seek to impose techniques or judge traditional practices. Our approach is to collaborate, listening to landowners and building solutions together.

It’s time to start forming alliances because the future of the land depends on us. We firmly believe that collaboration between landowners and environmental organizations is the best strategy to address drought, erosion, and the impacts of climate change. Together we can build a healthier, more productive, and resilient landscape for future generations.
