This summer, we’re pleased to welcome two biology students from the University of Sonora (UNISON) in Hermosillo: Paz Tapia and Andrea Borbon. They are joining our Sonora team for one of the final steps in their university careers — their practicums. Over the coming months, they will support various projects within our organization, such as recording and data collection for Spring Seeker and management and restoration activities at Regenerative Ranches. Get to know them a little better:
Paz Tapia
Paz is a ninth-semester biology student at UNISON and originally from Navojoa, Sonora. Her interest in the conservation of natural resources and endangered species motivated her to study biology.
Paz decided to intern with our organization because she recognizes the Sky Islands as places full of life and beauty.
She mentions that by interning with SIA, she’ll have the opportunity to be close to these landscapes and species, learn from them, and develop strategies to collaborate in conservation.
During her practicum, Paz hopes to learn about the dynamics between the organisms that inhabit these areas and acquire the ability to share this knowledge with others. In the future, she would like to visit Rancho El Aribabi, which promotes environmental conservation. She loves reptiles and amphibians, and she loves singing and painting.
A quote that inspires her: “The future of the planet depends on us.”
Andrea Borbon
Andrea is originally from Hermosillo, Sonora, and a ninth-semester undergraduate student in biology. Her interest and curiosity in studying life in all its forms motivated her to decide to study biology.
Andrea tells us that she decided to do her internship with SIA because it gives her the opportunity to experience new and unique places to study biodiversity in Sonora. During her time with us, she hopes to learn more about the importance of conserving our natural places and, in the future, would like to explore the area surrounding the municipality of Cananea, Sonora.
Her primary interest is mammals, and she loves cooking and sleeping.
A quote that inspires her: “Curiosity has no limits. We have so much to discover and learn.”
We are delighted to have their energy, curiosity, and commitment. And we firmly believe that new generations of biologists and the field experience they gain during their training are key to ensuring the protection of our ecosystems for a more just and sustainable future.
Welcome, Paz and Andrea!
