A Farewell Field Trip With UniSierra Volunteers

Earlier this summer, in May, SIA visited Rancho Nuevo in Moctezuma, Sonora, where we were accompanied by students from the Universidad de la Sierra. On this occasion, we said goodbye to three student volunteers — Estefani Moyers, Denisse Montaño and Jeny Ramos — who have participated in our FotoFauna project for a year and a half. This was their last outing as project participants, using cameras from the UniSierra lending library. They were in charge of checking the wildlife cameras and uploading all the information.

Big thanks also to Alondra Galdean, Daniela Rodriguez, Denia Valencia and Keren Esquer, who were students in the same social service program at UniSierra, and who have helped immensely with our FotoFauna project, accompanying us on field trips and so many adventures.

On this trip, like so many others, we looked forward to seeing what wildlife would show up on our remote cameras. On this outing, we saw pumas, coyotes, javelinas, skunks, and more.

During the tour, we were also able to observe 23 species of birds, which was amazing given that this was just one day on a single ranch in our beautiful Sky Islands. Below is a complete bird list from that day, as well as some more photos from past trips with our student volunteers, some of whom have just one more semester until they graduate from UniSierra’s biology program. We wish them luck and look forward to more collaborations in the future.
