We launched our first binational internship program at Sky Island Alliance this year! Despite the many challenges we’ve faced during a global pandemic, the internship program has been an incredible success—so much so that four of our interns from the Universidad de la Sierra (UniSierra) decided to stay on into the fall.

A pesar de los desafíos que enfrentamos durante una pandemia global, el programa de pasantías ha sido un éxito increíble, tanto que cuatro de nuestros pasantes de la Universidad de la Sierra (UniSierra) decidieron quedarse hasta el semestre de otoño.
Want to meet our fall interns? We recently interviewed them about their goals, interests in conservation, and internship experience. Next up is Miguel Francisco Enriquez Galaz, one of our long-standing SIA interns! Miguel is in his final semester at UniSierra and considers himself an avid birder.

What inspires you about conservation work and the future of our planet?
¿Qué te inspira sobre el trabajo de conservación y el futuro de nuestro planeta?
It inspires me to know that I can have a positive impact, whether small or large, towards the planet by supporting conservation. I believe that there is still the possibility of being able to help nature and reduce a little of the effects caused by humans.
Me inspira el saber que puedo llegar a tener un impacto positivo ya sea mínimo o grande hacia el planeta apoyando la conservación. Considero que aún existe la posibilidad de poder ayudar a la naturaleza y reducir un poco las afectaciones causadas por el humano.
What is your favorite part about being an intern with Sky Island Alliance?
¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de ser pasante con Sky Island Alliance?
The best thing about being a Sky Island Alliance intern was learning about conservation-related projects. In addition, it gave me the opportunity to visit places I never thought I’d get to go, and meet people passionate about conservation, which has given me an even greater interest in conservation.
Lo mejor se ser pasante de Sky Island Alliance fue el aprender sobre proyectos relacionados con la conservación. A demás me dio la oportunidad de conocer lugares en los que jamás imagine estar y personas apasionadas por la conservación, lo que me ha provocado un mayor interés por la conservación.
What advice do you have for other youth who want to get involved in conservation?
¿Qué consejo le daría a otros jóvenes que quieran involucrarse en la conservación?
My advice is: do not be afraid to ask questions or investigate issues related to conservation. Get involved in workshops, conferences, and activities by volunteering. [These things] will help you get involved in the world of conservation.
Mi consejo es, que no tengan miedo de preguntan o investigar sobre temas relacionados con la conservación, que se involucren en talleres, conferías y actividades siendo voluntarios, eso les ayudara a incorporarse en el mundo de la conservación.
Do you have a favorite flora or fauna species? / ¿Tiene una especie de flora o fauna favorita?
My favorite animal is the northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). I love to sit outside my house while I relax and listen to its different and beautiful songs.
My favorite plant is the sycamore tree (Platanus wrightii). I like to see the different ways in which these trees grow, the size of their leaves, the smooth texture of their trunks, and their whitish coloration. When autumn arrives, the alder’s leaves fall completely and cover the ground, adding to the beauty of the landscape.
Mi animal favorito es el Centzontle Norteño (Mimus polyglottos), me encanta sentarme afuera de mi casa, mientras me relajo y escuchando su diferente y hermoso canto.
Mi planta favorita es el Sicómoro de Arizona (Platanus wrightii), me gusta ver las distintas formas en que crecen estos árboles, los tamaños de sus hojas, la textura lisa de sus troncos y su coloración blanquecina. Al llegar el otoño sus hojas caen cubriendo completamente el suelo aumentando la belleza del paisaje.
What is your favorite season/time of year in the Sky Island region and why?
¿Cuál es su estación / época del año favorita en la región de las Islas de Cielo y por qué?
My favorite season of the year is summer because I can see the many plants that grow and bloom at this time of year. I like to go out in the fields and observe plants and animals, to learn about them and photograph them, which is one of my favorite activities. I also like to see how landscapes come alive with different colors of the vegetation.
Mi estación del año favorita es verano por que puedo ver muchas plantas que crecen y florecen en esta época del año, me gusta salir a campo y observar plantas y animales poder conocer sobre ellos y tomar fotografías, la cual es una de mis actividades favoritas, también me gusta ver como los paisajes reviven con sus distintas coloraciones por su vegetación.
