As a writer and English professor at Pima Community College in Tucson, I believe science, education, and activism are essential to preserving the Sky Island region and the immense diversity of life that calls these ecosystems home. Sky Island Alliance’s staff and volunteers perform work necessary to ensure the future of this unique place, and I am grateful for the opportunity to support their mission through serving on the board of directors.
I feel a deep connection to the desert and the mountains, especially to my wild neighbors. Nature is the revitalizing element in my life. This love for nature is reflected in my writing and storytelling, which explore themes ranging from the psychological effects of eco-activism to the individuality of animals. My article “Eyes in the Wild” appeared in BorderLore and profiles SIA’s FotoFauna and Border Wildlife Study.
At PCC, I teach LIT227 — Literature and the Environment — and serve on the committee supporting the college’s climate action and sustainability plan. Aside from literary and academic work, I spend my time hiking, urban exploring, monitoring a network of trail cameras, and volunteering for SIA.
