Alex PondSeasonal Botany Assistant

Alex joined Sky Island Alliance in August 2026 as a seasonal botany assistant based out of the Tucson office. Her work focuses on the curation of the Rincon Mountain flora to inform management strategies that help conserve rare species.

Growing up on a Christmas tree farm in Hawaiʻi, Alex has always had a deep interest in exploring nature. While finishing her bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Arizona, she rediscovered her passion for plant ecology while enrolled in an Evolutionary Biology course and interning in an Ecology lab. Following graduation, she began pursuing botany and conservation as a career. The diversity and humble beauty of the Sonoran Desert flora inspired her to learn about and protect the unique species that call it home. Over the next several years she worked for Coronado National Forest conducting rare plant surveys and post-wildfire invasive plant monitoring. She also spent time in the UK, aiding environmental nonprofits in England and working to improve habitats and wildlife there. Since moving back to Tucson, she has worked as a field technician and assistant botanist for Coronado National Forest and Saguaro National Park.

Outside of work, Alex enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors with her family. She also spends her free time dancing traditional Hawaiian hula, cooking, gardening, and learning about meteorology.
