Sky Island Alliance Board — Call to Service

Are you or talented folks in your community looking for ways to keep wildlife connected and thriving in the Sky Islands? Do you care about ensuring a vibrant future in the Sky Islands of the U.S. and Mexico? Sky Island Alliance, an international conservation organization based in Tucson, Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico, is seeking volunteer leaders to join its dynamic board of directors. Our mission is to protect and restore the diversity of life and lands in the Sky Islands of the U.S. and Mexico. More information about our past work and current programs is available throughout our website.

This is a great opportunity to put your talent and passion to work to support Sky Island Alliance to be an effective, sustainable binational organization that ensures the Sky Islands are a place where nature thrives and open space and clean water are available to all. Board members are ambassadors for Sky Island Alliance and actively involved in organizational governance. They’re expected to attend quarterly board meetings, participate in at least one board committee, be open to moving into an officer or committee leadership position over time, and support a culture of philanthropy for our mission. In turn, we support board members with onboarding, mentorship, formal training opportunities, and a collaborative staff and board community. Terms are three years, and board members can serve a maximum of three terms.

Board members may choose to additionally support the organization by tabling and/or representing the organization at events, attending SIA-sponsored volunteer days or events, or volunteering in some other capacity.

Our board needs a variety of skills, and in 2024 we’re particularly hoping to expand skills and connections in:

  • Financial management or accounting
  • Local and regional government
  • Human resources
  • Law
  • Community organizing
  • Cultural organizations and foundations in the Sky Island region of the U.S. and Mexico.

Bilingual and Spanish-speaking applicants strongly encouraged to apply.

The board’s external committee will review applications on an ongoing basis. Those interested in board service can submit a letter with their résumé and/or ask questions to both Executive Director Louise Misztal and Committee Chair Elaine Walsh.
