Let’s celebrate! In recognition of the effort to preserve ecosystems and biodiversity, 2,195 acres in the the Sierra La Mariquita, owned by the Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (National Institute of Astrophysics,Optics and Electronics) has been designated by the National Commission on Protected Areas (CONANP) as a new Voluntary Natural Protected Area.
La Mariquita is a small mountain range located just south of the Huachuca Mountains near the town of Cananea, Sonora. This is wonderful news for the rich biodiversity that calls the La Mariquita home, and for the conservation of natural resources that locals will continue to be able to enjoy in the future. The designation requires a management plan that includes actions to protect native species, prevent soil erosion, restore topsoil, and maintain roads and trails to prevent fires. Access will remain restricted and hunting prohibited, with public use of some areas for educational courses, workshops, outreach and scientific research.
