Communications Intern — Position Description

  • Title: Communications Intern  
  • Supervisors: Rick Mick (Communications Coordinator) and Sergio Müller (Sonora Conservation Coordinator) 
  • Duration: Two months (June-July 2024) with potential to expand into fall 2024 
  • Hours Per Week: 10 hours 
  • Pay Rate: USD $7 an hour / MXN $17 an hour 
  • Location: Mostly virtual with potential in-person meetings with staff in Sonora

Responsibilities & Duties 

Our communications program implements bilingual (English and Spanish) communications for Sky Island Alliance to build awareness and inspire public support and action to protect and restore the Sky Island region. The communications intern will help: 

  • Draft social media posts for Spanish social channels. 
  • Create flyers and other scientific outreach materials in Spanish.  
  • Propose and draft blogs for use in Spanish and English newsletters.  
  • Review SIA’s website to improve Spanish experience, inventory pages needing translated, implement translations for prioritized pages, and draft new content in Spanish for internal review. 

Job Requirements 

  • Interest and support of SIA’s mission. 
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent communication, writing, and editing skills in Spanish and English. 
  • Currently enrolled in a college degree program related to conservation, environmental science/education, and/or communications. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and social media. 
  • Access to internet and a computer. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in WordPress and/or website posting. 
  • Experience in Canva, Adobe, or other graphic design applications.
