SUMMARY:Spring Break: Bear Canyon Edition - Monday
DESCRIPTION:Spend a day or two (or most of the week!) with us in beautiful Bear Canyon. We are working to create a healthier habitat for native species by removing  invasive plants and planting species that are beneficial to the other native plants and animals in this riparian community.\n \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE! \n\nTRIP SCHEDULE \n\nPlan to meet us at the South end of the Safeway parking lot on the Northeast corner of Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde at 9am.\n\n\nWe’ll return to the meeting spot by 3pm.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be digging out invasive grasses. DESCRIPTION:  \nBACKGROUND \nIf you’ve been down to Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains recently\, you may have noticed that there are two new bridges near the trailheads. We are working with the Coronado National Forest\, Borderlands Restoration\, and Friends of Madera Canyon to restore ecosystem function at the site.  Come out and help stabilize this beautiful canyon (and birding hotspot) just an hour south of Tucson.\n \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE! \n\nPROJECT SCHEDULE (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) \n\n8:00 a.m.: Meet SIA staff at OUR NEW OFFICE – 406 S. 4th Avenue (at the corner of 14th in Armory Park) if you want a ride\, or to caravan\, to the site.\n9:00 a.m.: Meet SIA staff bright and early at the large parking lot at the top of Madera Canyon.\n3:00 p.m.: Load up and head back to Tucson.\n\nTHE WORK \nOur work is designed to prevent erosion from the construction site into Madera Creek\, and to re-establish native vegetation on the site. During this visit to the canyon\, the day’s work could include\, planting native plants\, watering and mulching the plants we’ve installed earlier this summer\, continuing to arrange rocks on the site to prevent errosion\, and removing invasive vinca from the forest understory. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate and SIA will provide all tools necessary. \nLOCATION & DIRECTIONS \n\nFrom Tucson\, head south on I-19 to Green Valley. DESCRIPTION:Centennial Saguaro Survey\nSaturday\, February 27th\nCelebrate 100 years of the National Park Service\n\n\n\n TO REGISTER CLICK HERE! \nBACKGROUND \n\n\nThe  Centennial Saguaro Survey will be happening through April 2016. On February 27th we will be hiking to a plot in the west district (Tucson Mountains)\, and counting/measuring/surveying saguaros. In the past\, these plots were established to see if a contagious disease was affecting the saguaros and surveying for epidermal browning. In the past twenty years the park has been focusing on climate change and invasive encroachment; observing if those two factors are causing the slight decline we are seeing in saguaro germination. \nPROJECT SCHEDULE & LOCATION \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the Box Canyon Turnout\, located at about 7768 W picture Rocks Road\, Tucson\, AZ 85743. There is plenty of parking! We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch. \nTHE WORK AND WHAT TO KNOW \nOur tasks will involve following a standardized protocol to survey saguaros and other targeted plant species. DESCRIPTION:Help Restore a Watershed in the Chiricahua Mountains!\nFriday\, February 5 – Sunday\, February 7\, 2016\nWe will be working in Tex Canyon\, on the west side of the Chiricahua Mountains\, at just under 6\,000 feet in elevation. Join us as we continue our work to control erosion and increase water infiltration in a watershed that was burned during the Horseshoe 2 fire!  This trip is free of charge and no experience is necessary. \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE!\nBACKGROUND \nThe Chiricahua Mountains are a large Sky Island located in the very southeastern corner of Arizona and rise 6\,000 feet above the surrounding desert grasslands.  We have been working with the Coronado National Forest\, US Geological Survey\, Borderlands Restoration\, Geosystems Analysis\, and Arizona Department of Corrections\, to install and monitor hundreds of trincheras and other rock erosion control structures in the Chiricahua and Pedregosa Mountains. \nTRIP SCHEDULE \n\nFriday\, Feb. 5\, 1:00 pm: Meet SIA staff at OUR NEW OFFICE – 406 S. 4th Avenue (at the corner of 14th in Armory Park). If you will be meeting us at the campsite\, proceed past the Rucker Canyon Campground to the USFS Administrative site – look for the green “SIA” sign.  A detailed map will be sent when the time approaches. We will have access to a kitchen\, bathrooms\, and bunks at the Admin site.\nSaturday\, Feb. 6\, 8:00 am:  Early breakfast and a rundown of the day’s activities. We’ll then caravan in appropriate vehicles to the Tex Canyon work site\, where we will work for the day.\nSunday\, Feb. 7\, 8:00 am: Continue work through the early afternoon\, then pack up and head home.  We will try and be back to Tucson around 5pm.\n\nTHE WORK\nOr work will focus on repairing/rebuilding rock stuctures that have been damaged by heavy flows and beefing up structures that seem to need it. This work will include lots of lifting\, bending\, and hiking on uneven terain. Please be prepared with boots\, pants\, long sleeves\, and gloves\, if you have a pair you like (we will also provide these). \nCAMP LOCATION & DIRECTIONS (From Tucson)\nDirections: Detailed driving directions will be sent to all registrants ahead of the event. We are working with the Coronado National Forest\, Borderlands Restoration\, and Friends of Madera Canyon to restore ecosystem function at the site.  Come out and help stabilize this beautiful canyon (and birding hotspot) just an hour south of Tucson. \nPROJECT SCHEDULE (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) \n\n9:00 a.m.: Meet SIA staff bright and early at the large parking lot at the top of Madera Canyon.\nIf individuals are interested in caravanning or catching a ride\, they can meet SIA staff at 8:00 a.m. at OUR NEW OFFICE – 406 S. 4th Avenue (at the corner of 14th in Armory Park). There will be no camping on site for this project.\n3:00 p.m.: Load up and head back to Tucson.\n\nTHE WORK \nOur work is designed to prevent erosion from the construction site into Madera Creek\, and to re-establish native vegetation on the site. During this visits to the canyon\, the day’s work could include\, watering and mulching the plants we’ve installed earlier this summer\, continuing to arrange rocks on the site to prevent errosion\, and removing invasive vinca from the forest understory. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate and SIA will provide all tools necessary. \nLOCATION & DIRECTIONS \n\nFrom Tucson\, head south on I-19 to Green Valley. Exit at Continental Road (exit 63) and follow the road east as it turns into White House Canyon Road. DESCRIPTION:This fall you can have the best of both worlds in the Santa Rita Mountains. \nJoin us in Madera Canyon for a bird and nature walk\, then we’ll spend the rest of the morning taking care of our restoration plantings. Register by clicking the orange date below! \nMonday\, November 23rd \nBACKGROUND \nIf you’ve been down to Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains recently\, you may have noticed that there are two new bridges near the trailheads. We are working with the Coronado National Forest\, Borderlands Restoration\, and Friends of Madera Canyon to restore ecosystem function at the site. Come out and help stabilize this beautiful canyon (and birding hotspot) just an hour south of Tucson. \nPROJECT SCHEDULE (8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) \n• 8:00 a.m.: Meet SIA staff bright and early at the large parking lot at the top of Madera Canyon for an interesting stroll through the area.\n• If individuals are interested in caravanning or catching a ride\, they can meet SIA staff at 7:00 a.m. at OUR NEW OFFICE – 406 S. 4th Avenue (at the corner of 14th in Armory Park). There will be no camping on site for this project.\n• 12:00 p.m.: Load up and head back to Tucson. \nTHE WORK \nOur work is designed to prevent erosion from the construction site into Madera Creek\, and to re-establish native vegetation on the site. During these visits to the canyon\, the day’s work will be a combination of installing native plants\, watering and mulching the plants we’ve installed earlier this summer\, and removing invasive vinca from the forest understory. SUMMARY:Spring Assessment: Ojo Blanco Bushwhack
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nBACKGROUND\nThis Saturday\, take a hike in the northern-most part of the Santa Ritas. We’ll go on a cross-country adventure to Ojo Blanco Spring to do a thorough spring assessment. This spring is at the eastern edge of the fire that burned this area this summer. You should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking). We will have spots for 2-3 people in the SIA vehicle\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own 4WD\, high clearance vehicle. \nTRIP SCHEDULE\n• Saturday\, November 14th\, 8:00 am: Meet at Sky Island Alliance to carpool (406 S 4th Ave). Head out to towards I-10 and Highway 83. \n• Eat lunch out in the field \n• 5:00 pm\, approximately: Return to SIA and head home for a shower! \nTHE WORK\nThis spring assessment requires hiking in steep terrain. We’ll drive in 2-3 mils on a 4WD road from Highway 83\, then hike about 2 miles to the spring. Half to three-quarters of the hike will be off-trail. At the spring\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. We’ll return to our vehicle\, making the round-trip hike about 4 miles\, perhaps a bit more. \nFor spring assessments\, we are looking for volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills\, and strong hikers. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nWHAT TO BRING\nLarger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nWater – I would suggest at least 3 liters.\nLunch and snacks – something you can hike in with you.\nSturdy footwear (e.g. hiking boots)\, plus clothing for cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc. Long pants are strongly recommended.\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver – All volunteers need to sign the agreement annually. We will have extras on-hand if this is your first time volunteering in 2015.\nIf you need to carry and EpiPen\, please bring it. \nPROVIDED BY SIA\nCameras\, GPS\, data sheets\, maps\, first-aid kit. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION\nThis trip will be led by Sami Hammer. SUMMARY:Bear Canyon Fountain Grass Battle - Veteran's Day
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER: Wednesday\, November 11th\n \nTRIP SCHEDULE \n\nPlan to meet us at the designated meeting spot (near the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area\, details TBD) at 8 am.\nWe’ll return to the meeting spot by 3pm.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be digging out invasive grasses. The work will include bending and walking on uneven surfaces\, and potentially walking through water.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAnything you would bring on a long day hike\, such as plenty of water\, lunch/snacks\, sturdy footwear (i.e. boots)\, sun protection (sunscreen\, long pants and long-sleeved shirts)\, etc.\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver (only needs to be filled our once in a calendar year) https://skyislandalliance.org/vol-agreement-waiver.pdf\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\nTools\, work gloves\, supplemental drinking water and first aid equipment.  Tools involved – shovels\, picks\, and metal pry bars will be our main weapons against these invasive plants.  Chemical herbicides will NOT be used.\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \n\nThis trip will be led by Bryon Lichtenhan.\nSorry\, dogs are not allowed on this project.\nThere is no fee involved for this project (although we will put any donations to good use!)\n\nQuestions?  Contact Bryon:  bryon@skyislandalliance.org or 520-624-7080

DESCRIPTION:This fall you can have the best of both worlds in the Santa Rita Mountains. \nJoin us in Madera Canyon for a bird and nature walk\, then we’ll spend the rest of the morning taking care of our restoration plantings. Register by clicking the orange date below! \nMonday\, November 9th \nBACKGROUND \nIf you’ve been down to Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains recently\, you may have noticed that there are two new bridges near the trailheads. We are working with the Coronado National Forest\, Borderlands Restoration\, and Friends of Madera Canyon to restore ecosystem function at the site. Come out and help stabilize this beautiful canyon (and birding hotspot) just an hour south of Tucson. \nPROJECT SCHEDULE (8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) \n• 8:00 a.m.: Meet SIA staff bright and early at the large parking lot at the top of Madera Canyon for an interesting stroll through the area.\n• If individuals are interested in caravanning or catching a ride\, they can meet SIA staff at 7:00 a.m. at OUR NEW OFFICE – 406 S. 4th Avenue (at the corner of 14th in Armory Park). There will be no camping on site for this project.\n• 12:00 p.m.: Load up and head back to Tucson. \nTHE WORK \nOur work is designed to prevent erosion from the construction site into Madera Creek\, and to re-establish native vegetation on the site. During these visits to the canyon\, the day’s work will be a combination of installing native plants\, watering and mulching the plants we’ve installed earlier this summer\, and removing invasive vinca from the forest understory. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate and SIA will provide all tools necessary. \nLOCATION & DIRECTIONS \n• From Tucson\, head south on I-19 to Green Valley. Exit at Continental Road (exit 63) and follow the road east as it turns into White House Canyon Road. Follow signs to the recreation area.\n• Carpooling is encouraged: SIA may have 1-2 spots in our vehicle for volunteers to tag along. Contact us to make arrangements. \nWHAT TO BRING \n• IMPORTANT: United States Forest Service requires participants to come dressed in long pants\, long sleeves\, and closed-toe shoes for this project. Failure to comply means you will not be able to work with us.\n• Water and any snacks/lunch you might need for a morning working outside.\n• Sturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) with closed toes is encouraged as is sun protection (ex. wide-brimmed hat\, sunblock)\n• Volunteer Agreement/Waiver – Only needs to be filled out once per calendar year. SUMMARY:Collect Seeds at Saguaro National Park
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE: https://skyislandalliance.givezooks.com/events/saguaro-seeds-rincon-mts-1\n\nBACKGROUND\nSky Island Alliance is partnering with Saguaro National Park to create pollinator friendly gardens at both of their visitor centers. In order to create these gardens\, we need plants\, and to get plants\, we need seeds! The purpose of this volunteer effort is to collect seeds from plants that we would like to be represented in the gardens.\n\n\nPROJECT SCHEDULE & LOCATION \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the Rincon Visitor Center\, located at 3693 S. Old Spanish Trail\, Tucsson\, AZ 85730. We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch and wrap up by around 1:00 p.m. \nTHE WORK AND WHAT TO KNOW \nOur tasks will involve following a standardized protocol to collect seeds from targeted plant species. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. Sky Island Alliance or one of our partners will provide all tools and instruction as well as extra copies of our volunteer waivers which need to be signed by each participant only once per calendar year. All seeds collected are property of the National Park Service.
