SUMMARY:Wildlife Tracking Workshop-Fall 2017-Aravaipa Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a four-day get-away in spectacular Aravaipa Canyon.  Participants gain hands-on field instruction and theory in a variety of skills and techniques\, including: \n\nNatural history and conservation of regional animal species\, with emphasis on the jaguar\, Mexican gray wolf\, ocelot\, black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, white-nose coati\, Mexican opossum\, badger\, desert tortoise\, and box turtle;\nWildlife track morphology\, structure and terminology;\nPhoto documentation;\nMotion-activated wildlife camera monitoring techniques;\nTrack casting and tracing techniques;\nAnimal gaits and movement; and\,\nHands-on experience with track identification in the field.  \n\n\n  \nREGISTRATION COSTS: \nRegular Registration: $295\, Full-Time Student or Mexican National: $195 \n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nLOCATION:\nThis workshop will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Guesthouse in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n12 Noon Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 12 pm on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n4 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around 4 pm.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible.  High clearance vehicles are recommended.  Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area.  Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. This means that you will want to be prepared with nine meals: from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. \nThe majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors and you can expect to spend time sitting\, and walking or strolling along wet creeks and dry riverbeds as we look for tracks and other wildlife sign.  We provide some blocks of free time\, but the schedule calls for long days\, starting around 8 am and ending around 7-8 pm. \nAll course materials are included.  You will receive Mark Elbroch’s field guide Mammal Tracks and Sign:  A Guide to North American Species\, a tracking ruler\, laminated wildlife track identification field cards\, and a workshop packet.  We provide a one-year membership to Sky Island Alliance for non-member participants\, including a subscription to our Restoring Connections newsletter. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nNo dogs or pets are allowed on this trip.  Participants are required to sign our volunteer release form.  Youth ages 13-17 are welcome if joined by an accompanying adult. Workshop registration will close one week before the first date of the workshop\, or when full. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nSky Island Alliance offers Wildlife Tracking Workshops twice a year\, in spring and fall.  Our workshops alternate between overnight camping and bed and breakfast style accommodations in different outdoor settings around the Sky Island region; cost can vary slightly based on amenities offered\, but every workshop is taught at the same high quality standard. \n***Cancellation policy:  Due to the limited space availability for this particular workshop\, we cannot provide refunds for cancellation.  However\, we can accept substitutions.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator\, at bryon@skyislandalliance.org\, or 520-624-7080 ext 27.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Planting at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument
DESCRIPTION:THE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points: \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M. \nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river. \n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns. No dogs on this one\, though \nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan at bryon@skyislandalliance.org. \n

SUMMARY:Wilderness Waters: Labor Day in the Galiuros
DESCRIPTION:BACKGROUND \nSIA has taken on a project to help the Coronado National Forest inventory and assess water resources in the Galiuro\, Miller Peak\, Rincon\, Chiricahua\, Mt. Wrightson\, Pajarita\, and Santa Teresa wilderness areas. This weekend\, we will be working to assess springs and other water resources in the Galiuro Wilderness area. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking) in very rugged and steep terrain. Some assessments will require hiking all day (perhaps 12 miles or more) both on and off trail. You should be a strong and experienced hiker to accompany us on this trip. We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. The roads into our potential campsites are rugged\, please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the southern Galiuros. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work throughout the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nMonday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until lunch time\, then pack up camp and head back to Tucson. We should arrive back at the office by 6pm Monday evening. \nTHE WORK \nAt our work sites\, we will be recording data such as water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, documenting the flora and fauna\, and assessing the condition of the site. These assessments will require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. The sites are usually up somewhat steep drainages\, so we may be clambering over and around boulders at times. Each team will hopefully be able to assess 2-3 sites per day. We may hike as much as 12 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. For these assessments\, no special skills are necessary\, but we are looking for strong hikers\, and tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills can be helpful. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nCAMP LOCATION \nCamp location has yet to be determined\, but it will almost certainly be a wilderness campsite. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, sleeping pad\, stove\, etc. that you might bring on any multi-day backpacking trip.\nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nRe-usable water vessels such as bottles or bladders\, a water filter\, or disinfecting method\, plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 9 meals out\, plus snacks.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them!\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\nTransportation to and from trail heads will be provided by SIA staff members and volunteers with suitable vehicles.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \nAssessment tools and equipment\, cameras\, GPS\, data sheets\, maps\, first-aid kits. \nDue to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \nThis trip will be led by Bryon Lichtenhan and Sami Hammer. However due to the nature of their field schedules\, questions should be directed to Carianne Campbell at carianne@skyislandalliance.org.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Blitz at Coronado National Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Sky Island Alliance and Coronado National Memorial will host a Pollinator BioBlitz in conjunction with the 2017 southeast Arizona iNat-athon. \nWhat is a Pollinator Blitz? It is a fun way to document and identify the different species of pollinators in the park using your smartphone (or digital camera) and the iNaturalist app for iOS or Android. \nThis activity will build a relationship between the natural and human communities of the area. Citizen-scientists (YOU!) work alongside scientists to learn about the biological diversity of the park. In the process\, you’ll gain skills and knowledge\, and develop a stronger connection to the natural spaces. \nJoin us for a couple of hours or stay the whole day. We will begin at 9am and end around 10pm. Check in at Coronado National Memorial Visitor Center and learn more about the Blitz. We’ll be running a shuttle up to Montezuma Pass throughout the day. \nRSVP on Facebook or email mirna@skyislandalliance.org to let us know you are coming. \nBring hiking gear\, sun protection\, rain gear\, water and a lunch if you’re staying for the day (snacks are available for purchase at the visitor center). And don’t forget to download and explore the iNaturalist app on your smartphone before you join us! (Don’t have a smartphone? No worries! Team up with a friend or bring your digital camera and we’ll work with you.) \nStay for the night time bug-lighting event! We’ll set up lights that will attract night insects so we can document and identify them. \nFor more information contact Mirna Manteca at mirna@skyislandalliance.org\, or call the Coronado National Memorial visitor center at 520-366-5515.

SUMMARY:Aravaipa Canyon-June Riparian Restoration
DESCRIPTION:LOCATION:\nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binocoulars! For more information about the Preserve:\nhttp://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/arizona/placesweprotect/aravaipa-canyon-preserve.xml \nWe will be working on the EAST SIDE of the canyon\, at the headwaters of the perennial creek. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\nGETTING THERE: \nDuring monsoon season\, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly encouraged. There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse.  \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Thursday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2:\nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Thursday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\nThursday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office for to carpool to the TNC Guesthouse.\nThursday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Thursday. Follow our green SIA arrow sign for the correct turnoff.\nFriday 8:00 AM: Be prepared to go over the day’s work and head out. We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch.\nSaturday 8:00 AM: At it again.\nSunday 8:00 AM: Get started on the day’s work. We will finish up by early afternoon and then head back to Tucson.\nSunday 6:00 PM: We will be back to our Tucson office by 6:00 PM Sunday.\n\nTHE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance has been helping TNC and the BLM in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. During this trip we are continuing our work to remove the invasive plant vinca (or periwinkle) from the understory of the creek banks. This will require digging and fastidious removal of root material\, with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and getting dirty. We will be working in areas that have been previously cleared and potentially in some new spots as well. This work is part of our longterm goal of eradicating vinca from the entire canyon!  We will also be checking on native plants that we installed in previously cleared areas to improve pollinator habitat. \nWe will break into teams and work all day Friday and Saturday\, and Sunday morning\, to dig out vinca and install native plants. We’ll leave time in the afternoons for exploring the canyon – be sure to bring a camera and your binoculars! We will depart the canyon in the early afternoon on Sunday to return to Tucson by 6pm. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek.  TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority. Nightly campfires are a big possibility. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 3 lunches\, and 3 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the creek.\nInsect repellent is a good idea this time of year!\n\nPLEASE NOTE: \nThis is a family-friendly trip; let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and any special concerns. A limited number of well-behaved dogs will be allowed – please let us know if you have a 4-legger that you’d like to bring along. \nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan at bryon@skyislandalliance.org.

Please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 3:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). We may hike as much as 8 miles in one day with part of that being off-trail. \nFor spring assessments\, prior training is not required\, but experienced volunteers and volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate or vertebrate identification skills are desired. \nCAMP LOCATION – TBD \nWe will caravan up to a camp site on Mount Lemmon (exact location TBD) for the weekend. It may be an undeveloped site\, so plan to bring your own water for drinking and washing (it’s a good idea to bring more than you think you will need)\, as well as trowels and toilet paper for bathroom breaks. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, mattresses\, stoves\, etc. that you might bring on any normal car camping trip.\nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nSeveral gallons of water per person plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 6 meals out\, plus snacks.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them!\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver – All volunteers need to sign the agreement annually. We will have extras on-hand if this is your first time volunteering in 2017.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \nTools\, basic camp kitchen set-up including camp stove\, extra water\, cameras\, GPS\, data sheets\, maps\, first-aid kits. \nDue to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \nThis trip will be led by Sami Hammer. SUMMARY:Adopt a Spring Orientation
DESCRIPTION:VENUE CHANGE: Due to the number of people registered\, we have moved the location for this event to the Summit Hut on Speedway (5251 E. Speedway Blvd.)\, in their community room. Thank you Summit Hut! \nCome learn about our Adopt a Spring program! \nSIA’s Adopt-A-Spring (AAS) citizen science program was developed to address the need for seasonal and long-term data on springs flows and status.  This information can help managers track how flow changes seasonally at different springs\, track ecosystem outcomes following restoration actions to gauge efficacy\, develop a more complete understanding of plants and animals supported by the spring\, and track how climate change may be affecting flow and other aspects. \nVolunteers choose one spring to visit five times per year to monitor how water flow\, water quality\, and wildlife use change over the seasons. The actual survey takes about an hour\, plus time driving and perhaps hiking there. This can be a great way to get involved if you can’t be away overnight\, or do a whole day of hiking on a regular spring assessment trip. \nAt the orientation\, we’ll tell you more about the program\, go over the springs available to adopt\, and begin forming teams to monitor each spring. Come join us! \nClick here to register
