SUMMARY:Hermitage Seep Restoration
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nCreate habitat for frogs\, bats\, and other pollinators in the Chiricahua Mountains! \n \nWe will be working at “Hermitage Seep” in Rucker Canyon\, on the west side of the Chiricahua Mountains\, at just under 6\,000 feet in elevation. Join us as we continue our work to expand ponds with hand tools\, build frog ramps\, and plant pollinator plants.  This trip is free of charge and no experience is necessary. \nBACKGROUND \nThe Chiricahua Mountains are a large Sky Island located in the very southeastern corner of Arizona and rise 6\,000 feet above the surrounding desert grasslands.  We are working with the Coronado National Forest\, Arizona Game and Fish Department\, Bat Conservation International\, and many others to create breeding habitat for threatened Chiricahua leopard frogs that will soon be released here\, as well as open water that is accessible for the 21 species of bats that occur in the Chiricahua Mountains. We will also be working with a variety of native plants. \nCAMP LOCATION & DIRECTIONS (From Tucson)\nDirections: Detailed driving directions will be sent to all registrants ahead of the event. All roads to the campsite are suitable for passenger vehicles. \nCarpooling is encouraged:  SIA will have 1-2 spots in our vehicle for volunteers to tag along\, and we are able to caravan. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, mattresses\, stoves\, etc. that you might bring on any normal car camping trip.  We will have access to bathrooms at the camping site.\nFive meals plus snacks. SUMMARY:Habitat Restoration at Gila Cliff Dwellings NM
DESCRIPTION:HABITAT RESTORATION WEEKEND\n Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument\, New Mexico \nREGISTER HERE: Friday\, August 21 – Sunday\, August 23 \nLOCATION:\n Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located approximately 2 hours north of Silver City\, New Mexico. Surrounded by over 3 million acres of National Forest\, the Monument is an important Ancestral Puebloan cultural site but is also managed for its natural qualities. \nTravel time from our office in Tucson is just under 5 hours. Although the distance from Silver City is only 44 miles via State Highway 15\, the travel time is approximately two hours due to twisting and winding mountain terrain. \nFor more information\, see the National Park Service’s official website: www.nps.gov/gicl  \nGETTING THERE: \nOverview Map: http://mapq.st/1Mxo0Du\nWe will be in touch with participants about caravanning and carpooling! \nTake State Highway 15 north from Silver City. Although the distance from Silver City is only 44 miles\, the travel time is approximately two hours due to twisting and winding mountain terrain. An alternative route from Silver City is along State Highway 35 and goes through the Mimbres Valley. Even though it is 25 miles longer than Highway 15\, it is less winding\, wider\, more level\, and easier to travel; therefore it takes about the same amount of time to drive. NOTE: If your vehicle\, travel trailer\, or RV is over 20 feet in length\, you should take Highway 35. \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service to restore a recently-burned hillslope near the main ruin loop at the Monument. Volunteers will be tasked with eradicating non-native plants (to be identified by SIA personnel) and installing native plants in their place. The work will require repeated trips to carry materials up and down the trail\, potentially including logs. The hillslope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials  on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nFriday’s plan is to arrive at the site and set up camp. Local participants may arrive by 7:30 a.m. on Saturday ready to work – please be sure to let us know when to expect you. We will break into teams and work all day Saturday\, August 22nd and most of the day on Sunday\, August 23rd to stabilize the hillslope and install new plantings. We will depart the site by 3pm on Sunday\, August 23rd to return to Tucson by late evening. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\n We will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points:  \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 3 lunches\, and 3 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is virtually no cellphone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M. \nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river. \nBringing both rain gear and insect repellent is a good idea this time of year!\n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nVolunteers are required to sign our liability waivers once annually- SIA staff will have extras on hand.  This is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns. \nFor more information\, please contact Christopher Morris\, Restoration Coordinator\, at christopher@skyislandalliance.org\, or 520-624-7080 ext 24.

SUMMARY:Santa Ritas Spring Assesments
DESCRIPTION:This weekend\, we will focus on assessing springs in the area that would be destroyed by the proposed Rosemont Mine. We’ll start with the springs that are in the area where the pit and tailings pile would be\, and then work our way out to other springs within a mile or so of the proposed operation. This area is also the heart of the jaguar’s territory\, so maybe we’ll even see some of his tracks!

SUMMARY:Madera Canyon Restoration
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nBACKGROUND \nIf you’ve been down to Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains recently\, you may have noticed that there are two new bridges near the trailheads. We are working with the Coronado National Forest\, Borderlands Restoration\, and Friends of Madera Canyon to restore ecosystem function at the site.  Come out and help stabilize this beautiful canyon (and birding hotspot) just an hour south of Tucson. \nPROJECT SCHEDULE (8am – 3pm) \n\n8:00 am: Meet SIA staff bright and early at the large parking lot at the top of Madera Canyon. \nIf individuals are interested in caravanning or catching a ride\, they can meet SIA staff at the Historic Y at 7:00 am (http://thehistoricy.com/location/). We hope to beat the heat by starting early. There will be no camping on site for this project.\n2:00 pm: return to Tucson.\n\nTHE WORK \nOur work is designed to prevent erosion from the construction site into Madera Creek\, and to re-establish native vegetation on the site. We will be installing simple rock structures to slow the flow of water across the site and to create perfect spots for native plants to be installed. Today’s work will be a combination of lifting\, transporting and placing rocks into place\, as well as installing native plants. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nLOCATION & DIRECTIONS \n\nFrom Tucson\, head south on I-19 to Green Valley. Exit at Continental Road (exit 63) and follow the road east as it turns into White House Canyon Road. Follow signs to the recreation area.\nCarpooling is encouraged:  SIA will have 1-2 spots in our vehicle for volunteers to tag along.  Contact Bryon to make arrangements.\n\n WHAT TO BRING \n\nIMPORTANT: United States Forest Service requires participants to come dressed in long pants\, long sleeves\, and closed-toe shoes for this project. Failure to comply means you will not be able to work with us.\nSeveral liters of water per person plus all the food you’ll need for an entire day outside.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) with closed toes is encouraged as is sun protection (ex. wide-brimmed hat\, sunblock)\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver – Only needs to be filled out once per calendar year.  Click here to download: https://skyislandalliance.org/vol_agreement_waiver.pdf\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\nHard hats and gloves.\nSite background and activity instruction.\nTools and materials: shovels\, picks\, rock bars\, wheelbarrow\, plants\, buckets\, DriWater\, chicken wire\, rebar…\n\n ADDITIONAL INFORMATION \n\nThis project will be led by Bryon Lichtenhan.  Contact him with any questions at Bryon@skyislandalliance.org or 520-624-7080\, ext. 27.\nSnake season is upon us! Please be careful when placing hands and feet; notify staff of any hazards as soon as possible.\nDogs are not allowed on this project.\n\n

SUMMARY:Aravaipa Canyon Restoration
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nLOCATION:\nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binocoulars! For more information about the Preserve:\nhttp://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/arizona/placesweprotect/aravaipa-canyon-preserve.xml \nAnd a recent feature by Arizona Public Media: \n\nWe work on the EAST SIDE of the canyon\, at the headwaters of the perennial creek. \nGETTING THERE: \nDuring monsoon season\, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly encouraged. There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse.  \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 300 W. University to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 1pm on Friday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2:\nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Friday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance has been helping TNC and the BLM in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. During this trip we are continuing a new task in Aravaipa Canyon – removing an invasive plant called vinca (or periwinkle) from the understory of the creek banks. This will require digging and fastidious removal of root material\, with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and getting dirty. Over the next couple of seasons\, we hope to remove about several acres of vinca.  We will also be installing native plants in previously cleared areas to improve pollinator habitat. \nWe will break into teams and work all day Saturday and Sunday to dig out vinca and install native plants. We’ll leave time in the afternoons for exploring the canyon – be sure to bring a camera and your binoculars! We will depart the canyon in the early afternoon on Sunday to return to Tucson by 5pm. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek.  TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority. Nightly campfires are a big possibility. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 2 breakfasts\, 2 lunches\, and 2 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the creek.\nInsect repellent is a good idea this time of year!\n\nPLEASE NOTE: \nVolunteers are required to sign our release and indemnity form once annually.  This is a family-friendly trip; let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and any special concerns. A limited number of well-behaved dogs will be allowed – please let us know if you have a 4-legger that you’d like to bring along. \nFor more information\, please contact Christopher Morris at christopher@skyislandalliance.org.

SUMMARY:Spring Assessments in the Santa Ritas
DESCRIPTION:RSVP for this trip here.\nBACKGROUND\nIn conjunction with land managers and planners in southern Arizona\, we are focused on the eastern Santa Cruz River valley for this weekend. The Santa Cruz starts in the San Rafael Valley\, dips down southwest into Mexico and then curves back north to the U.S. We will once again be focusing on the northern end of the range for these assessments. This is an overnight camping trip. Due to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nTRIP SCHEDULE\nFriday\, June 26th\, 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Meet SIA staff at the campsite (TBD). Set up camp and enjoy the evening. If individuals are interested in caravanning\, they can meet SIA staff at The Historic Y no later than 2 pm. \nSaturday\, June 27th\, 8:00 am: Early breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. For spring assessments\, we are looking for volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills\, and strong hikers. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nCAMP LOCATION & DIRECTIONS – TBD\nThe camp location will be made available the week of the trip\, with detailed directions from Tucson. As of now\, our goal is to be camped in the Proctor Road area near Madera Canyon; you pass by the fee booth on the main road (without paying) and then take a right on Proctor Road. Look for the green SIA signs to guide you in. Carpooling is encouraged. SIA will have 1-2 spots in our vehicle for volunteers to tag along. Contact Louise to make arrangements. \nWHAT TO BRING\n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, mattresses\, stoves\, etc. that you might bring on any normal car camping trip.\nLarger backpacks in which to carry shared springs assessment gear are a plus. SUMMARY:Wetland Restoration at Brown Canyon Ranch
DESCRIPTION:RSVP for this trip here.\nBACKGROUND \nThis project will restore a pond for the threatened Chiricahua leopard frog\, and Monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Sky Island Alliance is working with the US Forest Service to enhance wildlife habitat at the historic Brown Canyon Ranch. The main focus will be the removal of the old “House Pond” liner; an unknown party released a non-native frog into this pond last year\, initiating an involved pond-draining project.  This project will be directed by renowned wetland expert Tom Biebighauser. \nBrown Canyon Ranch was first settled around 1800 and has passed through the hands of numerous homesteaders and ranchers since then.  In 1998\, the property was acquired by the US Forest Service which currently manages the site in collaboration with the Friends of Brown Canyon Ranch\, a volunteer organization out of Sierra Vista.  Wild Duck Pond\, located on the ranch\, is a popular bird watching site in the Huachuca Mountains. \n  \nTRIP SCHEDULE \nCome for one day or all three! Participants are welcome to either arrive each morning by 9:30 am or camp in the area with us on Monday and/or Tuesday nights. \nWe have been granted use of the Reef Townsite Group area up Carr Canyon while working on this project. This site at 7\,200′ will give us a cool respite from the flats below and is located approximately 40 minutes away from Brown Canyon Ranch. More information will be made available the week leading up to the event. \nIf you would prefer to caravan with us from Tucson\, we will be leaving our offices at around 8:00am and we will spend the full day on the project. For those heading back to Tucson each evening you can expect to be back by around 5:00pm. \n  \nTHE WORK \nThis is rated as a moderate event. No hiking is necessary\, but participants will be working together to lift heavy items and/or conducting work with shovels and other hand tools. We will be installing a monarch butterfly waystation (http://www.monarchwatch.org/waystations/)\, with native milkweed plants as well as plants for other pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees. \n  \nDIRECTIONS FROM TUCSON  (1 hr. 30 min.)\nPassenger cars are able to access the work site without difficulty\nCarpooling is encouraged \n\nTake I-10 east toward El Paso.  Look for exit 302 for AZ-90 S (approx. 37 miles east of Tucson)\nContinue south on AZ-90 toward Fort Huachuca/Sierra Vista\nStay on AZ-90 passing through Sierra Vista (approx. 32 miles) turning right on Ramsey Canyon Road\nKeep going on Ramsey Canyon Road until you pass Calle Metate\, soon after that there will be a dirt parking area on the right.\nTurn into that parking area and follow the road to the ranch.\nhttp://www.browncanyonranch.org/directions.html\n\n  \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nWater\, snacks and lunch\, sturdy shoes or sandals\, long pants\, sun screen\, hat and sunglasses. Personal camping gear and food if you plan to camp out with us.\n\n\n  \nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\n\nTools\, extra water\, and work gloves. Volunteer waiver (or submit ahead of time).
