Since March 9\, 2020\, our 60-camera array along 34 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border recorded a huge diversity of mammals\, birds\, reptiles\, and insects that live along the rugged and scenic border. Wall construction is beginning this month on the eastern edge of our study site in the Huachuca Mountains through one of the last remaining cross-border corridors in the Sky Island region. \nThis Coffee Break webinar will discuss the 57 species detected so far and the urgent need to protect their habitat from imminent destruction. DESCRIPTION:Come join us February 28th to March 1st in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve! \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE! \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance has been helping The Nature Conservancy in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. Recently we’ve been working on addressing the threat of invasive periwinkle (Vinca major) throughout the canyon. During this trip we will continue our work to eradicate periwinkle from the riparian understory of the creek banks. Additionally\, we will be removing vinca from longer-term study plots that we are managing with the University of Arizona and the National Park Service. This will require digging and fastidious removal of vegetative material and roots with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, cutting\, digging\, getting dirty\, and getting wet. We will be working to clear vinca right along the banks of the creek\, meaning that we will be wading in and out of the water throughout each day. \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE! \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek. TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority\, and there are no single-occupancy rooms available. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 2 breakfasts\, 2 lunches\, and 2 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty and wet. You will also want sandals or water shoes for our work in the creek.\nIt will be cold while we are there! Please come prepared for cold nights and cold water!\n\nPlease note that we are working at The Nature Conservancy Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, NOT in the BLM Aravaipa Wilderness Area. You may not enter the BLM Wilderness Area without a permit (available here: https://www.recreation.gov/). Visitors to the Wilderness Area are carefully managed to protect the wildlife and other natural resources; unauthorized visitation to the Wilderness Area puts SIA’s relationships in jeopardy and will not be tolerated. Don’t worry\, though – there is plenty of beautiful creek to explore at the TNC Aravaipa Canyon Preserve! \nLOCATION:\nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binoculars! For more information about the Preserve:\nhttp://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/arizona/placesweprotect/aravaipa-canyon-preserve.xml \nWe will be working on the EAST SIDE of the canyon\, at the headwaters of the perennial creek. \nGETTING THERE:\nDuring monsoon season\, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly encouraged. There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse. \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Friday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2: \nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Friday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTRIP LOGISTICS\n\nFriday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the TNC Guesthouse.\nFriday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Friday. Follow our green SIA arrow sign for the correct turnoff.\nSaturday 8:00 AM: Be prepared to go over the day’s work and head out. We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch.\nSunday 8:00 AM: Get started on the day’s work. SUMMARY:Aravaipa Canyon Vinca Removal: Jan 31 - Feb 2
DESCRIPTION:Come join us January 31st to February 2nd in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve! \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE! \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance has been helping The Nature Conservancy in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. Recently we’ve been working on addressing the threat of invasive periwinkle (Vinca major) throughout the canyon. During this trip we will continue our work to eradicate periwinkle from the riparian understory of the creek banks. Additionally\, we will be removing vinca from longer-term study plots that we are managing with the University of Arizona and the National Park Service. This will require digging and fastidious removal of vegetative material and roots with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, cutting\, digging\, getting dirty\, and getting wet. We will be working to clear vinca right along the banks of the creek\, meaning that we will be wading in and out of the water throughout each day. \nTO REGISTER CLICK HERE! \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek. TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority\, and there are no single-occupancy rooms available. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 2 breakfasts\, 2 lunches\, and 2 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty and wet. You will also want sandals or water shoes for our work in the creek.\nIt will be cold while we are there! Please come prepared for cold nights and cold water!\n\nPlease note that we are working at The Nature Conservancy Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, NOT in the BLM Aravaipa Wilderness Area. Don’t worry\, though – there is plenty of beautiful creek to explore at the TNC Aravaipa Canyon Preserve! \nLOCATION:\nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binoculars! We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2: \nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Friday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. If you would like to volunteer for a less difficult please see the other survey events. \nWhen and Where: We will be meeting at the Visitor Center for Saguaro West at 8 am and ending around 1 pm. From the visitor center we will carpool with a National Park employee and then hike to our assigned plot. \nWhat to bring: We will be out hiking in the desert for several hours in places with out trails\, so please bring the following: \n\nLunch and Snacks\nWater: at least 2 liters\nBackpack\nClosed toed shoes\nSun protection: sunglasses\, hat\, sunscreen\nDurable clothing: long pants\n\nIf these items are forgotten\, you may not participate in the event\, as per National Park rules to keep you safe. \nWhat we will be doing? \nNo prior experience in surveying saguaros is necessary. We will be hiking out to our plot assigned by the National Park and counting and measuring every saguaro there. Small saguaros will be measured with rulers and the larger saguaros will be measured with clinometers. All techniques will be taught by a Park employee while we are there. Additionally\, we will count the number of arms and bird holes each saguaro has. Participants gain hands-on field instruction and theory in a variety of skills and techniques\, including: \n\nNatural history and conservation of regional animal species\, with emphasis on the jaguar\, Mexican gray wolf\, ocelot\, black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, white-nose coati\, Mexican opossum\, badger\, desert tortoise\, and box turtle;\nWildlife track morphology\, structure and terminology;\nPhoto documentation;\nMotion-activated wildlife camera monitoring techniques;\nTrack casting and tracing techniques;\nAnimal gaits and movement; and\,\nHands-on experience with track identification in the field.\n\n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nLOCATION:\nThis workshop will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Guesthouse in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n9 AM Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 9 AM on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n12 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around noon.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible. High clearance vehicles are recommended. Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area. Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. This means that you will want to be prepared with nine meals: from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. \nThe majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors and you can expect to spend time sitting\, and walking or strolling along wet creeks and dry riverbeds as we look for tracks and other wildlife sign. We provide some blocks of free time\, but the schedule calls for long days\, starting around 8am and ending around 7 or 8 at night. \nAll course materials are included. DESCRIPTION:Join us for National Public Lands Day as we remove invasive grasses from the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area! \nWe will be meeting at the South end of the Safeway parking lot on the NE corner of Tanque Verde and Sabino Canyon Rds. Access to our work area on the National Forest is restricted\, so we will need to carpool into the canyon in as few vehicles as possible. \n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP SCHEDULE \n\nPlan to meet us at the designated meeting spot (NE corner of Sabino Canyon Rd and Tanque Verde Rd\, at the south end of the Safeway parking lot) at 8 am.\nWe’ll return to the meeting spot by 2pm.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be digging out invasive grasses. The work will include bending and walking on uneven surfaces\, and potentially walking through water.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Pants and long-sleeved shirts are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Aside from that\, anything you would bring on a long day hike would be recommended\, such as plenty of water\, lunch/snacks\, sun protection (sunscreen\, wide-brimmed hat)\, etc.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\nTools\, work gloves\, supplemental drinking water and first aid equipment. Tools involved – picks\, and metal pry bars will be our main weapons against these invasive plants. During this trip we are continuing our work to eradicate the invasive plant vinca (or periwinkle) from the riparian understory of the creek banks. This will require digging and fastidious removal of vegetative material and roots with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, cutting\, digging\, getting dirty\, and getting wet. We will be working to clear vinca right along the banks of the creek\, meaning that we will be wading in and out of the water throughout each day. This work is part of our long-term goal of removing vinca from the entire canyon! \n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nWHAT TO EXPECT: \nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek. TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority\, and there are no single-occupancy rooms available. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 2 breakfasts\, 2 lunches\, and 2 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty and wet. You will also want sandals\, water shoes\, or muck-type boots for our work in the creek.\n\nPlease note that we are working at The Nature Conservancy Aravaipa Preserve\, NOT in the BLM Aravaipa Wilderness Area. Don’t worry\, though – there is plenty of beautiful creek to explore at the TNC Aravaipa Preserve! \nLOCATION: \nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binoculars! There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse. \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Friday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2: \nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Friday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\nFriday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the TNC Guesthouse.\nFriday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Friday. Don’t worry\, though – there is plenty of beautiful creek to explore at the TNC Aravaipa Preserve! \nLOCATION: \nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binoculars! There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse. \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Friday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2: \nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Friday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\nFriday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the TNC Guesthouse.\nFriday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Friday. SUMMARY:"Springs" Break Backpack
DESCRIPTION:For several years Sky Island Alliance has been working to document springs and their surrounding ecosystems in the Sky Islands. We are planning a backpacking expedition into the Galiuro Mountains\, one of the least documented of the Arizona Sky Islands\, from March 2-8 to continue our springs assessments and water rights validations for the Forest Service. Due to the current government shutdown\, there are still some particulars that need to be determined before everything is entirely nailed down (for instance the dates could shift a day or two)\, but we want to start getting interested folks in the loop. We will share more details as our plans come together. \nTHIS IS A 5-7 DAY\, REMOTE BACKPACKING TRIP IN THE GALIURO MOUNTAINS!  WE WILL BE OFF THE GRID AND OUT OF TOUCH IN ROUGH AND RUGGED COUNTRY. PARTICIPANTS COMMITTING TO THIS TRIP NEED TO BE IN STRONG\, HEALTHY PHYSICAL CONDITION. PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS OUTING CAREFULLY BEFORE REGISTERING. \nDue to project logistics\, participants need to be able to commit to the entire trip. Participants will not be able to leave unless there is an emergency situation. \nThis trip will require experienced backpackers who are comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking) in rugged terrain. Backpacking may be on or off trail. We will likely set up a basecamp or two and dayhike from there each day. You should have most of your own gear\, but Sky Island Alliance may be able to provide some items\, and some others (e.g. water filters) may be shared among the group. We will be hiking from 4-12 mi per day\, with longer distances being more on trail. Elevations would be from approximately 4000-6000′. We will coordinate a carpool/caravan for participants. Drivers will need a high clearance\, preferably 4WD\, vehicle. There is no cell phone or radio reception in this area\, so we will have an inReach satellite locator for emergency purposes. \nTHE WORK \nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. For these spring assessments\, we are looking for people with plant\, invertebrate\, bird\, herp\, and track identification skills\, and good hikers. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, stoves\, mattresses\, etc. that you might bring on any normal backpacking trip. We will share a suggested packing list.\nPlease plan to carry shared springs assessment gear in your backpacking pack once we’ve established base camp.\nAll the food you’ll need. Bring food that will keep for the duration of the trip. There will be no refrigeration or coolers in which to store food.\nFood storage – bring a bear canister\, or rope and bags in which to store your food out of reach of bears and other critters.\nWater filter (or other treatment)\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them! Long sleeves are also recommended.\nAnything else you would normally bring for a day-hike.\nIf you need to carry or have an EpiPen\, please bring it.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \nSpring assessment tools and forms\, cameras\, GPS\, maps\, first-aid kits\, inReach. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \nDue to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nThis trip will be led by Sami Hammer and Bryon Lichtenhan.
