DESCRIPTION:Ring in the new year with us as we discuss the evolving situation with the state of Arizona’s illegal shipping-container wall on the Coronado National Forest. Our Program Director Emily Burns and Dinah Bear\, legal expert and co-founder of the Border Coalition\, will host the virtual talk\, followed by a Q&A. We’ll be celebrating the good news that Arizona has agreed to remove the shipping containers and drop its lawsuit against the U.S. government — no longer disputing federal ownership of the 60-foot strip of land along the border known as the Roosevelt Reservation. We’ll also discuss how the shipping-container project affected wildlife and communities at the border\, and we’ll share what we know about next steps for border wall deconstruction.

The newest container drop site is on Coronado National Forest land in the southern Huachuca Mountains and right in the heart of our Border Wildlife Study. Our Program Director Emily Burns will describe what’s at risk for wildlife in this area. And Dinah Bear\, legal expert and co-founder of the Border Coalition\, will provide insight into the conflict between the state and federal government along the 60-foot-wide strip of land next to the border known as the Roosevelt Reservation.

SUMMARY:Springs Restoration in the Whetstones
DESCRIPTION:McGrew Spring is a shady\, secluded oasis in southern Arizona’s Whetstone Mountains. Closed to the public\, the spring is more than two miles from any other water source and is a favorite haunt of coatis\, black bears\, mountain lions\, coyotes\, and birds. Unfortunately\, in recent years\, the spring has become overtaken by an invasive plant called horehound. And a protective fence has come down\, allowing cattle trespass and trampling. On Oct. 2 we’ll rebuild the fence and remove the rest of the invasive plants from the site.
