SUMMARY:Wilderness Waters: Chiricahuas - Portal Springs
DESCRIPTION:This will be a longer car camping trip to assess some springs in the Chiricahua Wilderness.\n\nSIA has taken on a project to help the Coronado National Forest inventory and assess water resources in the Galiuro\, Miller Peak\, Rincon\, Chiricahua\, Mt. Wrightson\, Pajarita\, and Santa Teresa Wilderness Areas. This weekend\, we will be working to assess springs and other water resources in the Chiricahua Wilderness.\n\nFor these assessments\, no special skills are necessary\, but we are looking for strong hikers\, and tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills can be helpful. Prior spring assessment training or experience is preferred\, but not required.\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\n\nTrip Leader: Sami\n\nTrip Itinerary\n\nDay 1\n\n3:00pm Meet at SIA and pack up. Caravan/carpool out to a campspot out near Portal. Set up camp. Figure out teams for the weekend.\n\n\nDays 2-3\nSpend the day hiking to spring near Portal. Some trailheads will probably require some 4WD.\n\nDay 4\n8:00 Pack up\, spend most of the day getting a few more springs assessed.\n4:00 Head back to Tucson by this time.\n\nWe will be camping at ~5000-6000′ elevation. The hiking should be between 5000-8000′. Some springs will require only a 4WD drive and a short hike on trail\, but several springs will require a longer hike on trail\, up to about 3 miles one-way\, and 2000′ of elevation gain). Be prepared for some off trail hiking near any spring. Several of the springs we will go to this weekend require short\, but steep\, off-trail hikes\, so you should be comfortable with rugged terrain and bushwhacking.\n\n\n\nWeather: Here’s a 7-day forecast you can keep an eye on. My guess is that we will likely see highs in the 80s\, and lows in the 60s\, with a good chance for afternoon thunderstorms.\n\nWater: If we camp at a developed site\, there should be water available\, but if we camp at an undeveloped site\, you should plan to bring your drinking water. We will let you know more details before the trip.\n\nFood: Bring your own food. You are welcome to collaborate with other folks coming on the trip\, though.\n\nGear: Bring your usual gear for a car camping and day hiking\, including raingear! Closed toed shoes are required for working on the forest\, and long sleeves and pants are recommended. If you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\n\nSprings gear: Make sure to bring a larger daypack and save some room in your pack for some springs gear that SIA will provide (1-2 liters of space).\n\nQuestions: Email sami@skyislandalliance.org (or call me 624 7080 x16)\n\nVehicles: We will bring the 4WD SIA trucks that can carry 2 additional people total. We will need some other volunteers to drive 4WD vehicles.

SUMMARY:Aravaipa Canyon Planting and Vinca Removal: September
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL OFFER: Sign up a friend who has never joined us on a field trip. If they join us for the weekend you will receive our cool Path of the Jaguar pint glass. \nATTENTION: We are now offering the option to register for just Friday evening through Sunday for those of you who have to work. You will need to provide your own transportation if you chose this option. Please read the caution under “Getting There”. \nTHE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance has been helping TNC and the BLM in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. During this trip we are continuing our work to eradicate invasive plant vinca (or periwinkle) and young tamarisk trees from the understory of the creek banks.  This will require digging up the plants and fastidious removal of vegetative material\, with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We will also be planting native plants in and around areas that have been cleared of vinca. We’ll be bending\, digging\, getting dirty\, and getting wet. We will be working to clear vinca right along the banks of the creek\, meaning that we will be wading in and out of the water throughout each day. This work is part of our long-term goal of removing vinca from the entire canyon! \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nWHAT TO EXPECT: \nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek. TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority\, and there are no single-occupancy rooms available. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 3 lunches\, and 3 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty and wet. You will also want sandals or water shoes for our work in the creek.\nInsect repellent is a good idea this time of year!\n\nPlease note that we are working at The Nature Conservancy Aravaipa Preserve\, NOT in the BLM Aravaipa Wilderness Area. You may not enter the BLM Wilderness Area without a permit (available here: https://www.recreation.gov/). Visitors to the Wilderness Area are carefully managed to protect the wildlife and other natural resources; unauthorized visitation to the Wilderness Area puts SIA’s relationships in jeopardy and will not be tolerated. Don’t worry\, though – there is plenty of beautiful creek to explore at the TNC Aravaipa Preserve! \nLOCATION: \nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binoculars! For more information about the Preserve:\nhttp://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/arizona/placesweprotect/aravaipa-canyon-preserve.xml \nWe will be working on the EAST SIDE of the canyon\, at the headwaters of the perennial creek. \nGETTING THERE: \nDuring monsoon season\, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly encouraged. There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse. \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Thursday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2:\nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Thursday or Friday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\nThursday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the TNC Guesthouse.\nThursday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Thursday. Follow our green SIA arrow sign for the correct turnoff.\nFriday 8:00 AM: Be prepared to go over the day’s work and head out. We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch.\nFriday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Thursday. Follow our green SIA arrow sign for the correct turnoff.\nSaturday 8:00 AM: At it again.\nSunday 8:00 AM: Get started on the day’s work. We will finish up by early afternoon and then head back to Tucson.\nSunday 6:00 PM: We will be back to our Tucson office by 6:00 PM Sunday.\n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip; let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if you have any special concerns. \nWe can accommodate a small number of well-behaved dogs on this trip. If you would like to bring your canine companion\, please contact Bryon ahead of time. \nIf you have further questions\, please email Bryon Lichtenhan at: bryon@skyislandalliance.org

Don’t worry\, though – there is plenty of beautiful creek to explore at the TNC Aravaipa Preserve! \nLOCATION: \nAravaipa Canyon is located at the northern border of the Galiuro Mountains. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the raven flies (the west end trailhead is approximately a 2 hour drive from Sky Island Alliance’s office in downtown Tucson). With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona and is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binoculars! For more information about the Preserve:\nhttp://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/arizona/placesweprotect/aravaipa-canyon-preserve.xml \nWe will be working on the WEST SIDE of the canyon\, near the West Aravaipa Canyon West Trailhead. \nGETTING THERE: \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Friday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head north on Oracle Road/AZ-77 to East Aravaipa Rd. \nOption 2:\nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Friday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (73 miles) Take Oracle Road/AZ-77 north to East Aravaipa Rd. SUMMARY:Gila Cliff Dwellings Seed Collection and Invasives Removal
DESCRIPTION:TO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTHE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the Monument. Volunteers will be removing invasive plants that have moved into the site\, and collecting new seed that can be grown out for future plantings in the park. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance or Borderlands Restoration. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nThursday’s plan is to arrive at the site and set up camp. Local participants may arrive by 8:30 a.m. on Friday ready to work – please be sure to let us know when to expect you. We will break into teams and work all day Friday\, Saturday\, and part of the day on Sunday. We will depart the site by 3 p.m. on Sunday to return to Tucson by late evening. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points: \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center\, but you will want to bring enough bottles to have plenty at your campsite\, as the water is rather far away.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river.\n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns. No dogs on this one\, though \nLOCATION:\nGila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located approximately 2 hours north of Silver City\, New Mexico. Surrounded by over 3 million acres of Wilderness\, the Monument is an important Ancestral Puebloan cultural site but is also managed for its natural qualities. \nTravel time from our headquarters in Tucson is just under 5 hours. Although the distance from Silver City is only 44 miles via State Highway 15\, the travel time is approximately two hours due to twisting and winding mountain terrain. PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT NEW MEXICO IS IN A DIFFERENT TIME ZONE\, so plan your travel accordingly. \nFor more information\, see the National Park Service’s official website: www.nps.gov/gicl  \nGETTING THERE:\nFROM TUCSON: Overview Map: https://goo.gl/maps/PNxY9Rjb1zT2 \nMeet us at the SIA office 406 S. 4th Ave at 10 am on Thursday to caravan / carpool to the monument. \nFROM SILVER CITY: Take State Highway 15 north from Silver City. Although the distance from Silver City is only 44 miles\, the travel time is approximately two hours due to twisting and winding mountain terrain. An alternative route from Silver City is along State Highway 35 and goes through the Mimbres Valley. Even though it is 25 miles longer than Highway 15\, it is less winding\, wider\, more level\, and easier to travel; therefore it takes about the same amount of time to drive. NOTE: If your vehicle\, travel trailer\, or RV is over 20 feet in length\, you should take Highway 35. \nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan at bryon@skyislandalliance.org. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!

SUMMARY:Fall Wildlife Tracking Workshop 2018
DESCRIPTION:TO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n  \nJoin us for a four-day get-away in a spectacular Sky Island setting with Sky Island Alliance staff for our renowned wildlife tracking workshop! Participants gain hands-on field instruction and theory in a variety of skills and techniques\, including: \n\nNatural history and conservation of regional animal species\, with emphasis on the jaguar\, Mexican gray wolf\, ocelot\, black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, white-nose coati\, Mexican opossum\, badger\, desert tortoise\, and box turtle;\nWildlife track morphology\, structure and terminology;\nPhoto documentation;\nMotion-activated wildlife camera monitoring techniques;\nTrack casting and tracing techniques;\nAnimal gaits and movement; and\,\nHands-on experience with track identification in the field.\n\nLOCATION:\nThis workshop will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Guesthouse in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n12 Noon Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 12 pm on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n4 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around 4 pm.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible. High clearance vehicles are recommended. Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area. Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. This means that you will want to be prepared with nine meals: from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. \nThe majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors and you can expect to spend time sitting\, and walking or strolling along wet creeks and dry riverbeds as we look for tracks and other wildlife sign. We provide some blocks of free time\, but the schedule calls for long days\, starting around 8am and ending around 7 or 8 at night. \nAll course materials are included. You will receive Mark Elbroch’s field guide Mammal Tracks and Sign: A Guide to North American Species\, a tracking ruler\, laminated wildlife track identification field cards\, and a workshop packet. \nPLEASE NOTE:\nNo dogs or pets are allowed on this trip. Participants are required to sign our volunteer release form. Youth ages 13-17 are welcome if joined by an accompanying adult. Workshop registration will close one week before the first date of the workshop\, or when full. \n***Cancelation policy: Due to the limited space availability for this particular workshop\, we cannot provide refunds for cancelation. However\, we can accept substitutions. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator\, at bryon@skyislandalliance.org\, or 520-624-7080 ext 27. \n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!

Trails in this wilderness are not often maintained. Portions may be washed away by high flows in the canyons or overgrown with cat claw\, and we will not even be on trails all the time. We may have to deal with some steep terrain.\n\nTrip Leaders: Sami and Bryon\n\n\nTrip Itinerary:\n\n\nDay 1 – Drive out to Fourmile Canyon Campground near Klondyke\, AZ. Car camp.\nDay 2 – Drive 4WD road to Rattlesnake Mesa. Backpack ~7.5 mi to Power’s Garden\, 3 of which are on an old 4WD road. Check for old diversions near camp.\nDay 3 – Split into 2 teams. One team will dayhike 3.5 mi\, mostly on trail (condition unknown) to Coffee Dam\, ~1600′ elevation gain. The other team will dayhike 2 mi to Douglas Tank\, return to camp\, and then dayhike 1 mi to South Field Canyon Dam\, with only a bit of elevation gain.\nDay 4 – Backpack back out to the vehicles and drive home.\n\nElevation ranges from 4500′ – 6600′.\n\n\n\n\nDrivers: We will drive our SIA trucks that can carry 3-4 others. Let me know if anyone else has a 4WD vehicle you can bring along!\n\nWeather: Here’s a 7-day forecast you can keep and eye on. My guess is that we will likely see highs in the 70s\, and lows in the upper 20s or 30s.\n\n\nFood: Bring your own\, but you can coordinate with others ahead of time. Should be 3 lunches\, 3 dinners\, and 3 breakfasts\, plus snacks.\n\nSafety: Bryon and Sami have Wilderness First Responder training. Let us know if you have WFA or WFR. We will also have a satellite communicator that we can use to text each other\, any phone or email\, or call search and rescue. BRING BEAR SPRAY IF YOU HAVE IT. SIA will bring a couple cans\, too.\n\n\nWater: We should be able to find water to filter in a few places.\n\nGear : Your usual backpacking gear!\n\nSprings gear: Make sure to save some room in your pack for some springs gear (1-2 liters of space).\n\nQuestions: Email sami@skyislandalliance.org (or call me 624 7080 x16)

SUMMARY:Aravaipa Canyon Vinca Removal: January
DESCRIPTION:THE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance has been helping TNC and the BLM in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. During this trip we are continuing our work to eradicate invasive plant vinca (or periwinkle) from the riparian understory of the creek banks. This will require digging and fastidious removal of vegetative material and roots with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, cutting\, digging\, getting dirty\, and getting wet. We will be working to clear vinca right along the banks of the creek\, meaning that we will be wading in and out of the water throughout each day. This work is part of our long-term goal of removing vinca from the entire canyon! \n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! We’ll return to the meeting spot by 2 pm. The meeting spot will be near Tanque Verde and Sabino Canyon Rd\, but details of the exact meeting location will be sent to registered participants. Access to our work area on the National Forest is restricted\, so we will need to carpool from our meeting spot in as few vehicles as possible. \nTHE WORK \nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be digging out invasive grasses. The work will include bending and walking on uneven surfaces\, and potentially walking through water. \nWHAT TO BRING \nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. SUMMARY:"Springs" Break Backpack
DESCRIPTION:For several years Sky Island Alliance has been working to document springs and their surrounding ecosystems in the Sky Islands. We are planning a backpacking expedition into the Galiuro Mountains\, one of the least documented of the Arizona Sky Islands\, from March 2-8 to continue our springs assessments and water rights validations for the Forest Service. Due to the current government shutdown\, there are still some particulars that need to be determined before everything is entirely nailed down (for instance the dates could shift a day or two)\, but we want to start getting interested folks in the loop. We will share more details as our plans come together. \nTHIS IS A 5-7 DAY\, REMOTE BACKPACKING TRIP IN THE GALIURO MOUNTAINS!  WE WILL BE OFF THE GRID AND OUT OF TOUCH IN ROUGH AND RUGGED COUNTRY. PARTICIPANTS COMMITTING TO THIS TRIP NEED TO BE IN STRONG\, HEALTHY PHYSICAL CONDITION. PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS OUTING CAREFULLY BEFORE REGISTERING. \nDue to project logistics\, participants need to be able to commit to the entire trip. Participants will not be able to leave unless there is an emergency situation. \nThis trip will require experienced backpackers who are comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking) in rugged terrain. Backpacking may be on or off trail. We will likely set up a basecamp or two and dayhike from there each day. You should have most of your own gear\, but Sky Island Alliance may be able to provide some items\, and some others (e.g. water filters) may be shared among the group. We will be hiking from 4-12 mi per day\, with longer distances being more on trail. Elevations would be from approximately 4000-6000′. We will coordinate a carpool/caravan for participants. Drivers will need a high clearance\, preferably 4WD\, vehicle. There is no cell phone or radio reception in this area\, so we will have an inReach satellite locator for emergency purposes. \nTHE WORK \nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. For these spring assessments\, we are looking for people with plant\, invertebrate\, bird\, herp\, and track identification skills\, and good hikers. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, stoves\, mattresses\, etc. that you might bring on any normal backpacking trip. We will share a suggested packing list.\nPlease plan to carry shared springs assessment gear in your backpacking pack once we’ve established base camp.\nAll the food you’ll need. Bring food that will keep for the duration of the trip. There will be no refrigeration or coolers in which to store food.\nFood storage – bring a bear canister\, or rope and bags in which to store your food out of reach of bears and other critters.\nWater filter (or other treatment)\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them! Long sleeves are also recommended.\nAnything else you would normally bring for a day-hike.\nIf you need to carry or have an EpiPen\, please bring it.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \nSpring assessment tools and forms\, cameras\, GPS\, maps\, first-aid kits\, inReach. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \nDue to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nThis trip will be led by Sami Hammer and Bryon Lichtenhan. If you are interested in joining us\, contact Sami at sami@skyislandalliance.org or call 520-624-7080\, ext. 16. It’s going to be gorgeous out there!

SUMMARY:Aravaipa Canyon Vinca Removal: March
DESCRIPTION:THE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance has been helping TNC and the BLM in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. During this trip we are continuing our work to eradicate invasive plant vinca (or periwinkle) from the riparian understory of the creek banks. SUMMARY:Fall Wildlife Tracking Workshop: 2019
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a four-day get-away in a spectacular Sky Island setting with Sky Island Alliance staff and regional guest experts. Participants gain hands-on field instruction and theory in a variety of skills and techniques\, including: \n\nNatural history and conservation of regional animal species\, with emphasis on the jaguar\, Mexican gray wolf\, ocelot\, black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, white-nose coati\, Mexican opossum\, badger\, desert tortoise\, and box turtle;\nWildlife track morphology\, structure and terminology;\nPhoto documentation;\nMotion-activated wildlife camera monitoring techniques;\nTrack casting and tracing techniques;\nAnimal gaits and movement; and\,\nHands-on experience with track identification in the field.\n\n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nLOCATION:\nThis workshop will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Guesthouse in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). \nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n9 AM Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 9 AM on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n12 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around noon.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nWorkshop registration will close Sunday\, October 20th\, or when full. \nNo dogs or pets are allowed on this trip. Participants are required to sign our volunteer release form. Youth ages 12-17 are welcome if joined by an accompanying adult. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!

SUMMARY:Aravaipa Canyon Vinca Removal: November
DESCRIPTION:THE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance has been helping The Nature Conservancy in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. Recently we’ve been working to ramp up our efforts to address the threat of invasive periwinkle (Vinca major) throughout the canyon. During this trip we are continuing our work to eradicate periwinkle from the riparian understory of the creek banks and also removing vinca from some longer-term study plots that we will be managing along with folks from the University of Arizona and the National Park Service. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 2 breakfasts\, 2 lunches\, and 2 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty and wet. You will also want sandals or water shoes for our work in the creek.\n\nPlease note that we are working at The Nature Conservancy Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, NOT in the BLM Aravaipa Wilderness Area. Don’t worry\, though – there is plenty of beautiful creek to explore at the TNC Aravaipa Canyon Preserve! \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Friday. \nOption 2: \nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Friday evening. \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\nFriday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the TNC Guesthouse.\nFriday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Friday. Follow our green SIA arrow sign for the correct turnoff.\nSaturday 8:00 AM: Be prepared to go over the day’s work and head out. We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch.\nSunday 8:00 AM: Get started on the day’s work. \nUnfortunately\, pets are not allowed on this trip. \nIf you have further questions\, please email Bryon Lichtenhan at: bryon@skyislandalliance.org \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!
