SUMMARY:Rooted: public values and uses for Arizona streams and springs
DESCRIPTION:What does water mean to you?\nView the recording of Julia’s presentation on our YouTube channel. \nIs water really life\, as reflected in public values and principles? Fresh water in an increasingly arid region like ours is important\, but seeing or having access to surface water has many different meanings and uses to different people. This presentation will explore some of those meanings using local examples. \nOur laws and policies for surface water are based on certain shared values and uses. What are the values and principles embodied in policies for care of water? How do they differ from the values and principles that govern water-dependent wildlife? What are the consequences of these differences\, in relation to the economy and the policies for both water and wildlife. \nJulia Fonseca\, Environmental Planning Manager at Pima County has worked on land and water issues in southern Arizona for 30 years\, first as a hydrologist with Pima County Flood Control District on groundwater recharge projects\, and later in the Office of Sustainability and Conservation at Pima County where she now oversees portions of Pima County’s Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. \nThis is part of our Water Roots series. Learn more about the series here. \nHere’s a list of all upcoming Water Roots events\nThere are no upcoming events.

SUMMARY:Walnut Check-Up in the Santa Catalinas
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\n\n\n\nJoin us as we check in on walnut trees we planted to improve habitat for the Santa Catalina gray squirrel in gorgeous riparian canyons right in our own backyard!  \nBACKGROUND \nThe Santa Catalina grey squirrel (a subspecies of the Arizona grey squirrel) is in decline throughout the Catalinas and Rincons. Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. With the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we planted native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! Now we are going back to determine how many trees survived\, and to remove the cages we placed around the trees. \n\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\n\nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\n9 AM: Meet with SIA staff at the south end of the Safeway parking lot in the Madera Village Shopping Center: NE corner of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway.\nSaturday 4:00 PM: We will work throughout the day\, and wrap things up around 4 PM.\nSaturday 5:00 PM: We will arrive back at our meeting spot by 5:00 PM or so.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be carrying buckets of water and caging materials through steep\, uneven terrain.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Due to the possibility of surface water in the project area\, you might want to wear shoes/boots that you dont mind getting wet and or muddy. Aside from that\, anything you would bring on a long day hike would be recommended\, such as plenty of water\, lunch/snacks\, sun protection (sunscreen\, long pants and long-sleeved shirts)\, cloting appropriate for the weather\, etc.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\nTools\, work gloves\, supplemental drinking water and first aid equipment.\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \n\nFamilies welcome!\nSorry\, dogs are not allowed on this project.\nThere is no fee involved for this project (although we will put any donations to good use!)\n\nQuestions? During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n12 Noon Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 12 pm on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n4 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around 4 pm.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible.  High clearance vehicles are recommended.  Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area.  Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. This means that you will want to be prepared with nine meals: from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. \nThe majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors and you can expect to spend time sitting\, and walking or strolling along wet creeks and dry riverbeds as we look for tracks and other wildlife sign.  We provide some blocks of free time\, but the schedule calls for long days\, starting around 8 am and ending around 7-8 pm. \nAll course materials are included.  You will receive Mark Elbroch’s field guide Mammal Tracks and Sign:  A Guide to North American Species\, a tracking ruler\, laminated wildlife track identification field cards\, and a workshop packet.  We provide a one-year membership to Sky Island Alliance for non-member participants\, including a subscription to our Restoring Connections newsletter. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nNo dogs or pets are allowed on this trip.  Participants are required to sign our volunteer release form.  Youth ages 13-17 are welcome if joined by an accompanying adult. Workshop registration will close one week before the first date of the workshop\, or when full. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nSky Island Alliance offers Wildlife Tracking Workshops twice a year\, in spring and fall.  Our workshops alternate between overnight camping and bed and breakfast style accommodations in different outdoor settings around the Sky Island region; cost can vary slightly based on amenities offered\, but every workshop is taught at the same high quality standard. \n***Cancellation policy:  Due to the limited space availability for this particular workshop\, we cannot provide refunds for cancellation.  However\, we can accept substitutions.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator\, at bryon@skyislandalliance.org\, or 520-624-7080 ext 27.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Planting at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument
DESCRIPTION:THE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points: \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M. \nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river. \n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns. No dogs on this one\, though \nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan at bryon@skyislandalliance.org. \n

SUMMARY:Wilderness Waters: Labor Day in the Galiuros
DESCRIPTION:BACKGROUND \nSIA has taken on a project to help the Coronado National Forest inventory and assess water resources in the Galiuro\, Miller Peak\, Rincon\, Chiricahua\, Mt. Wrightson\, Pajarita\, and Santa Teresa wilderness areas. This weekend\, we will be working to assess springs and other water resources in the Galiuro Wilderness area. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking) in very rugged and steep terrain. Some assessments will require hiking all day (perhaps 12 miles or more) both on and off trail. You should be a strong and experienced hiker to accompany us on this trip. We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. The roads into our potential campsites are rugged\, please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the southern Galiuros. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work throughout the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nMonday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until lunch time\, then pack up camp and head back to Tucson. We should arrive back at the office by 6pm Monday evening. \nTHE WORK \nAt our work sites\, we will be recording data such as water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, documenting the flora and fauna\, and assessing the condition of the site. These assessments will require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. The sites are usually up somewhat steep drainages\, so we may be clambering over and around boulders at times. Each team will hopefully be able to assess 2-3 sites per day. We may hike as much as 12 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. For these assessments\, no special skills are necessary\, but we are looking for strong hikers\, and tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills can be helpful. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nCAMP LOCATION \nCamp location has yet to be determined\, but it will almost certainly be a wilderness campsite. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, sleeping pad\, stove\, etc. that you might bring on any multi-day backpacking trip.\nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nRe-usable water vessels such as bottles or bladders\, a water filter\, or disinfecting method\, plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 9 meals out\, plus snacks.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them!\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\nTransportation to and from trail heads will be provided by SIA staff members and volunteers with suitable vehicles.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \nAssessment tools and equipment\, cameras\, GPS\, data sheets\, maps\, first-aid kits. \nDue to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \nThis trip will be led by Bryon Lichtenhan and Sami Hammer. However due to the nature of their field schedules\, questions should be directed to Carianne Campbell at carianne@skyislandalliance.org.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Blitz at Coronado National Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Sky Island Alliance and Coronado National Memorial will host a Pollinator BioBlitz in conjunction with the 2017 southeast Arizona iNat-athon. \nWhat is a Pollinator Blitz? It is a fun way to document and identify the different species of pollinators in the park using your smartphone (or digital camera) and the iNaturalist app for iOS or Android. \nThis activity will build a relationship between the natural and human communities of the area. Citizen-scientists (YOU!) work alongside scientists to learn about the biological diversity of the park. In the process\, you’ll gain skills and knowledge\, and develop a stronger connection to the natural spaces. \nJoin us for a couple of hours or stay the whole day. We will begin at 9am and end around 10pm. Check in at Coronado National Memorial Visitor Center and learn more about the Blitz. We’ll be running a shuttle up to Montezuma Pass throughout the day. \nRSVP on Facebook or email mirna@skyislandalliance.org to let us know you are coming. \nBring hiking gear\, sun protection\, rain gear\, water and a lunch if you’re staying for the day (snacks are available for purchase at the visitor center). And don’t forget to download and explore the iNaturalist app on your smartphone before you join us! (Don’t have a smartphone? No worries! Team up with a friend or bring your digital camera and we’ll work with you.) \nStay for the night time bug-lighting event! We’ll set up lights that will attract night insects so we can document and identify them. \nFor more information contact Mirna Manteca at mirna@skyislandalliance.org\, or call the Coronado National Memorial visitor center at 520-366-5515.
